The Humanities department at Oakfield Academy strives to develop our pupils’ learning about the world around us in the past, present and the future. All subject knowledge contributes towards the development of the world we live in.
Geography helps us to understand basic physical systems that affect landscapes and livelihoods, learn the location of places and the physical and cultural characteristics of those places in order to function more effectively in our increasingly interdependent world and to understand the geography of past times and how geography has played important roles in the evolution of people, their ideas, places and environments.
Our Specialist Humanities Team: Mr Adam Reynolds (Head of Humanities), Miss Lois Wright.
Oakfield Academy is delighted to announce that is has received The Secondary Geography Quality Mark: in recognition of excellence in teaching and learning in geography. The SGQM is a prestigious award which recognises quality and progress in geography leadership, curriculum development and learning and teaching in schools. All the award winners undergo a rigorous moderation process, and the team of assessors were hugely impressed by the manner in which the team at Oakfield Academy continues to embrace new and innovative approaches to help the pupils in their learning.
‘There has really never been a more important time for young people to learn about the global community.’ Stated Deputy Head Teacher , ‘Growing up in the 21st century means living in an increasingly interconnected world, one facing a growing number of global challenges such as climate change and the need to live our lives sustainably. The way geography is taught at the academy allows pupils the opportunity to really learn at a high level, it fascinates and inspires them to become global citizens.
Year 8 pupil Sophie commented ‘The learning is relevant to what we as young people experience and that really helps us learn. We are also able to apply the skills in other lessons like Maths and English which helps us with our confidence.’
Oakfield Academy is currently in the process of applying for the 2022 Secondary Geography Quality Mark.
